According to a new study by CEO.com and Domo, 68 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs still do not have a social media presence. These new findings were published in CEO.com’s “2013 Social CEO Report” which examined social media usage among the Fortune 500 elite.
Google+ is the least used social network by Fortune 500 CEOs with usage up to just one percent compared to 0.8 percent in 2012. Facebook use only grew 0.6 percent to 7.6 percent while Twitter and LinkedIn experienced single digit growth.
Twitter use grew two percent in the past year to 5.6 percent, and LinkedIn use also grew two percent to 27.9 percent. Only 28 Fortune 500 CEOs are on Twitter, and 32 percent are inactive, having not tweeted in the past 100 days.
Combined, these 28 CEOs on Twitter have over two million followers. However, the study found that up to 30 percent of their followers were fake profiles. On average, Fortune 500 CEOs active on Twitter tweet about once per day.
Being the business social network it is, LinkedIn is used by 140 CEOs with 25 having over 500 connections.
Mark Zuckerberg is the most popular CEO on Facebook with nearly 17 million followers, and billionaire Warren Buffet currently has almost 550,000 followers on Twitter after joining May 2, 2013.
Unsurprisingly, the day Warren joined Twitter is also the last day he tweeted.
