Facebook Messages received a redesign in August 2012 and the social network is rolling out several new changes starting today. One of the first changes are new filters for your inbox with two different options. By selecting “Basic Filtering,” you’ll mostly see messages in your inbox from your Facebook friends or friends you may know.
If you currently have “Who can send me Facebook Messages” set to “everyone” or “friends of friends,” Basic Filtering will automatically be turned on. With the second new option “Strict Filtering,” you’ll mostly see messages strictly from your friends in your inbox. Strict Filtering will automatically be turned on if you had your previous setting set to just “Friends.”
These new filters are supposed to help with better delivering the right Facebook Messages to your inbox instead of the “Other” folder which can be overlooked. If a new message makes its way into your inbox that you didn’t want to see, selecting “Move to Other” or “Report Spam” will help fix the problem.
Facebook is also looking to monetize its Messages with guaranteed delivery in someone’s inbox. From Facebook’s Newsroom:
“Today we’re starting a small experiment to test the usefulness of economic signals to determine relevance. This test will give a small number of people the option to pay to have a message routed to the Inbox rather than the Other folder of a recipient that they are not connected with.
“Several commentators and researchers have noted that imposing a financial cost on the sender may be the most effective way to discourage unwanted messages and facilitate delivery of messages that are relevant and useful.”
Paid Facebook Messages will cost $1 and only be for personal messages sent between users in the US with the ability to send a maximum of one paid message per week.
