Facebook Car Crash: Woman Dies After Posting While Driving

It wasn’t drugs or alcohol. It wasn’t speeding or a mechanical error. Police in North Carolina believe that the fatal car crash that killed 32-year-old Courtney Ann Sanford was caused by Facebook.

Sanford was killed in a car crash last week in North Carolina and police believe that the accident was the result of distratced driving. According to Lt. Chris Weisner, Sanford was taking selfies and posting to her Facebook account moments before her death.

Weisner said: “The Facebook text happened at 8:33 a.m. We got the call on the wreck at 8:34 a.m. In a matter of seconds, a life was over just so she could notify some friends that she was happy.”

So what was Sanford’s final message to the world? Apparently the woman was listening to the hit song “Happy” shortly before crashing her car. Her final Facebook post read: “The happy song makes me HAPPY.”

Texting while driving is illegal in most states, including North Carolina. Of course, the “texting while driving” ban also encompasses social media sites like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. So please, don’t text and drive. Don’t tweet and drive. Don’t Facebook and drive. Don’t selfie and drive. Basically, if it involves taking your eyes off the road, don’t do it. For a list of all states with laws banning hand-held cellphone use or texting click here.
