When Star Wars first hit theaters in 1977 there was no such thing as Instagram, “selfie” was not in the Oxford English Dictionary, and the coolest gadget in the galaxy was a lightsaber. Man, times sure have changed. Darth Vader posted his first selfie today on the new Star Wars Instagram page.
Vader, who poses in front of what looks like a dead storm trooper, writes: “Just another day at the office.”
The photo doesn’t come from the set of Star Wars: Episode 7 (filming doesn’t begin until next year) but it does give a glimpse at Disney’s marketing effort behind the new film. Star Wars already had a huge fan base but Disney is hoping to attract a new generation of viewers. And what better way to do that than with social media?
The Star Wars instagram account has only been active for a few hours but it looks like Disney is serious about using the site to promote the new movie. In the last four hours, Disney has posted three photos and has gained more than 30,000 followers.
The most recent photo is of a concept model for the Star Destroyer in A New Hope.
