#CrimingWhileWhite: Internet’s Eric Garner Protest Goes Viral

While thousands of protesters took the streets last night to protest the grand jury’s decision not to bring charges in the death of Eric Garner, thousands more took to Twitter. The hashtags #EricGarner, #IcantBreathe and #crimingwhilewhite have been trending all morning on the social network.

The #CrimingWhileWhite hashtag attempts to point out how police interact with white people and black people. Eric Garner, for instance, was stopped by police because he was allegedly selling loose cigarettes on the corner. The encounter ended with Garner being choked to death.

But what would happen if he was #crimingwhilewhite?

The decision not to indict NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo sparked another wave of racial outrage around the internet. The NYPD promised on Twitter to “rebuild trust” but that message fell on deaf ears.

Last night on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart dedicated the first few minutes of the show to the Eric Garner decision. But unlike other segments, Stewart couldn’t bring himself to joke about the situation.

Watch his emotional response below.
