No comedian likes to bomb on stage. In fact, ask Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Louis C.K. or just about any other stand up comic working today and they’ll all tell you the same thing: Bombing is one of the most embarrassing and humiliating experiences in life.
Louis C.K. said: “What comes with experience is being able to get the crowed back after you lost them. Bombing means: You lost them, they’re gone, and you just roast in hell until your time is up. You want to get offstage. But you also don’t want to get offstage until you can solve it.”
Well, Eliot Chang had a different approach. The comic decided to purposefully put himself through the excruciating pain of bombing on purpose. And Chang didn’t try to win back the audience. Instead, his goal was to stay on stage until his allotted time was up.
Chang writes on YouTube: “This was a spontaneous prank on an audience of comics. They were supportive awesome. The challenge was to not give away the fact that I was a professional. It’s pretty cringeworthy.”
Yeah, that was pretty brutal. The only time Chang actually gets a laugh is when he’s talking sheepishly about how bad he is doing.
But was this really on purpose? Maybe Chang just had a terrible night and is trying to play this off as a prank. Let’s take a look at another Eliot Chang video.
