Alan was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His mother a teacher and his father was occupied in a pharmaceutical company. He attended Parma High School and the University of Illinois where he earned a degree in drama.
He made his Broadway debut in 1985 after graduating, and Alan moved to Chicago to work in stage plays and theatre. He said that in New York or Los Angeles, he didn’t know anyone, so the best choice for him was to do theater in Chicago. Alan has performed on different stages, including Wisdom Bridge Theatre in Chicago, before turning to the film career.
