73% Of Parents Say Children Under 13 Should Not Have A Facebook Profile

Facebook

Facebook currently only allows people ages 13 and up to join, but that hasn’t stopped all children from creating an account.

According to a recent survey published by the Yale Rudd Center, 73.4 percent of parents feel it’s not okay for children under 13 to have a Facebook profile.

In July 2013, over 1,200 adults ages 21 to 65 were asked to agree or disagree to several statements regarding children under 13 using Facebook.

Out of the 902 who were parents, here were the statements, followed by the results:

If children under 13 are permitted to use Facebook, it would be okay for advertisers to use the personal information on a child’s profile to target that child with marketing.

70.6 percent disagreed, 29.4 percent agreed.

If children under 13 are permitted to use Facebook, it would be okay for fast food, soft drink and other snack companies to market to children under 13 on Facebook.

69.7 percent disagreed, 30.3 percent agreed.

If children under 13 are permitted to use Facebook, it would be okay for advertisers to use software to track the activities of children under 13 on Facebook (such as their “likes,” websites they visit, etc.)

68.7 percent disagreed, 31.3 percent agreed.

If children under 13 are permitted to use Facebook, it would be okay for advertisers to use the personal information and profile of children under 13 on Facebook to send marketing messages to their parents.

68.7 percent disagreed, 31.3 percent agreed.

From Yale Rudd Center:

There is very little support, among parents and other adults, for Facebook to allow children under 13 to join the social networking site. Further, there is considerable concern about allowing advertisers to use Facebook to reach children with marketing messages to encourage the consumption of unhealthy food, as well as practices that would allow companies to use children’s Facebook information and activities to target advertising messages to them directly.

Back in October, Facebook opened up the ability for teens to post publicly, and have followers.
