Twitter has amassed a mammoth number of users and nearly half of them have never sent a single tweet. A new study suggests that 44% of of all accounts have never sent out a message from the micro-blogging platform.
Twopcharts, a site that monitors Twitter account activity, reported the data. Shortly after that finding a Twitter representative said the social network does not comment on third-party findings.
The study does not explain if Twopcharts focused on ghost accounts or other forms of users. For example, some users sign up for the service simply to consume information.
Various reports over the last several years have found similar “ghost accounts” scattered throughout Twitter. The company for its part has deleted millions of spam riddled accounts that targeted active users.
A study published in November, 2013 by Jason Ding, a research scientist at Barracuda Labs, found that”at least 10 percent, maybe more” of all Twitter accounts are fake.
In February the social network announced that it had surpassed 241 million monthly active users with a base of 184 million active mobile users.
The more users Twitter attracts with a higher level of engagement, the better the company succeeds. What this study does not reveal is whether or not “ghost users” are clicking on ads and engaging “off-site” with the content they find through the services timeline.
