If you don’t follow men’s swimming closely you may not have noticed Michael Phelps retired after the 2012 London Olympics.

The 22-time Olympic medalist announced a comeback today through USA Swimming and will compete at an event in Mesa, AZ from April 24-26.​

The return paves the wave for the most accomplished Olympian in United States history to compete at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio.

The 28 year old swimmer has competed at four prior Olympics. Phelps has increased the intensity of his training regiment in recent months as rumors of the comeback swirled.

Whenever Michael Phelps is in the headlines some cannot resist making bong jokes. The Subway spokesman was photographed in the act after he gained international fame at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

At the time Michael Phelps was contrite about the regretful photo.

“I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”
