1. Grave of the Fireflies (Movie)

Grave of the Fireflies is an 1988 anime movie directed by Isao Takahata. Set during the World War II, the story follows two children Seita and Setsuko who become orphans and homeless due to the devastation caused by American bombs in their city. It tells the journey of them in the warring times and their fight with hunger, poverty and homelessness.

This was one of the very first anime movie that I watched long back. It was an emotional journey throughout where I was trying hard to hold my tears and lost many times. Till then, I was assuming anime is all about friendships, fights and adventures and this film shattered all those misconceptions.

Note: I know you are here to watch / learn about sad anime but this might be a bit too much for you as it stays with you for a few days after watching it. Thus this is the saddest anime movie ever that I have watched.

2. A Silent Voice (Movie)

The anime follows Shouya Ishida and his friends who bullies Shouko Nishimiya a deaf girl and new transfer to the school to a point where she has to leave the school.

When Nishimiya’s mother notifies the school regarding the bullying every one singled out Ishida and ostracized him for the rest of his schooling. Years later he realizes his wrong doings and sets out to amend his mistakes.

This is a beautifully made anime movie that talks about the complex subject of bullying, disabilities and redemption and a must watch for the anime fans.

3. Angel Beats!

Angel beats is a story of dead high school students in their afterlife that are not yet ready to ‘move on’ to the next life. To move on they must finish their unfinished business with he current world and in the process we will unravel many mysteries of the afterlife.

The anime has some of the best visuals and music and we think you’ll enjoy it if you are looking for an anime that will make you cry.

4. Your Lie In April

The anime follows Arima Kousei a prodigy pianist who suddenly stopped playing after the demise of his mother. He feels guilty of the way he treated his mother before her demise and stops playing the piano completely.

One day he meets Miyazono Kaori, a violinist with a different worldview who helps him in rediscover his love for piano. The anime is about self-discovery and the personal growth of the main characters which will make you feel happy, sad and fall in love with the anime.

5. Violet Evergarden

The anime follows Violet Evergarden an emotionless super-soldier who is trying to reintegrate into society in a post-war world. In the current peaceful world she tries to learn emotions and to understand the true meaning of her dearest commander’s dying words.

To do so, she takes the job as a memory doll, who writes letters to people on behalf of their clients and in the process learn more about the peoples feelings and life itself. This is a very well made anime that has a lot of emotional beats that will make you sad and happy at the same time.
