Crimson Peak is a film steeped in the universe of Guillermo del Toro; a mixture of and homage to cinema from other eras, as well as a story with a deep gothic vein in a beautifully detailed wrapper.
The film is set in the year 1900 in Buffalo, New York, later taking us to Cumberland, England. While the American city shows a thriving, avant-garde society, in the Old World city we will find a hostile, crumbling environment… yes, ghostly in its entire splendor. It is here that we can see one of the most outstanding elements of the film: Allerdale Hall. The mansion that holds the deepest secrets of the story, where everything begins and ends.
This mansion is another character, without a doubt; it is a setting halfway to ruin and in decay, as well as a very beautiful and brutal metaphor for the story. When Edith marries Sir Thomas Sharpe ignoring her father’s advice, everything changes when they move into the mansion that holds many dark secrets.
Movies like Crimson Peak are deep dark dramas with horror aspects where we learn a lot about the characters, their fears, wishes and frustrations in a chilling memorable setting. Check out our list here:
