8.9 Million Tweets Generated During Oscars

Excited viewers of Sunday’s 85th Academy Awards generated nearly 8.9 million Oscars-related tweets. Twitter users sent 2.1 million during the red carpet pre-show, but the buzz really hit new highs once the show began, with nearly 6.8 million tweets hitting the web during the event.

Mashable reported that Adele’s Skyfall performance and later Best Original Song win were Twitter’s second and fourth top-tweets-per-minute (TPM) with 82,300 TPM and 64,000 TPM respectively.

Another major trending topic last night, reported by Cinema Blend, was #wesawyourboobs, a comedic song that emcee MacFarlane led in to with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles highlighting all of the A-list actresses that exposed their boobs in the name of showbiz.

Here’s a rundown of the top trending Twitter topics during the event:

  • Best Picture award for Argo: 85,300 tweets per minute (TPM)
  • Adele performing Skyfall: 82,300 TPM
  • Best Actress in a Leading Role for Jennifer Lawrence: 71,600 TPM
  • Best Original Song for Adele: 64,000 TPM
  • Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Anne Hathaway: 60,400 TPM
