At No Frills, customers pack their own groceries rather than a cashier handling it. Apparently one woman was too slow at it, though, and got banned from the store.
Between crowded aisles, squeaky carts that don’t properly steer, and long lines, there’s never a shortage of annoyances at the supermarket. However if you witnessed a woman experiencing difficulty packing her own groceries, wouldn’t you give her a hand?
Evidently, some say no. Linda Rolston frequently shopped at No Frills in Alberta, Canada. After undergoing surgery for cancer, it left Rolston with limited mobility in her arms and shoulders. Week after week, after paying for her groceries she’d struggle to pack them away all by herself.
She contends she was compelled to “beg and plead” for staff to assist her, but they refused. Ultimately she went to the owner, who promised to aid. Though at length, one day while attempting to pack her groceries as swiftly as she could, that same owner approached. He informed her if she can’t shop with a person who can pack her grocery bags for her, she can’t shop at the store anymore – period.
“I was stunned,” Rolston told reporters. “I said, ‘Are you telling me because I’m disabled I can’t shop here?’ And he said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘I don’t have anyone to help me and I have my prescriptions here.’ He said, ‘Well, you’re just going to have to go somewhere else.'”
Rolston grumbled to Loblaw head office, the establishment that owns No Frills. Their customer service sincerely apologized and advised her that she could shop at the store, giving the she phones ahead to see if someone there could assist her.
“I’m an adult. I’m not going to phone to get permission to go shopping,” stated Rolston. The head office too offered her a $100 gift card – on the stipulation she gives up any/all rights to sue and remains quiet about what occurred. “They can keep the $100,” she said. Rolston’s opt to file a human rights complaint against No Frills.
