On Trump Walking Ahead Of Melania
It’s often pointed out that Trump walks ahead of Melania, rather than side by side like most couples do. He doesn’t keep her dry with his umbrella or check that she needs a hand taking on a set of stairs in her heels. Numerous body language experts have had something to say about this, including Susan Constantine who told Mic:
“If you didn’t know that they were married, you wouldn’t know that they are married.”
Tonya Reiman, a public image consultant and author on body language also weighed in on their odd behavior in public.
“Trump and Melania do not have a warm relationship on or off-camera compared to their pre-politics era. The Trumps barely touch each other now compared to early videos. He will walk ahead of her, or push ahead to be first. When he sees another couple holding hands, then he’ll turn around to
self correct .”
On Their Dance At The Inauguration Ball
Many viewers labeled the dance between Mr. and Mrs. Trump and the Inauguration Ball as stiff and awkward. While it could be blamed on their inexperience as a public couple and a failed attempt to ensure they’re taken seriously, body language experts have another theory. Body language expert Patti Wood explained her analysis of this Trump moment saying:
“There was one moment where she kissed him but it was very, very formal. They didn’t seem to have intimate moments during the dance; it didn’t seem to be about them as a couple. The fact that he broke into song toward the audience makes it less about them. He was happy
in the moment but it didn’t seem to be a shared, intimate moment.”
On Melania’s Missing Smile
It has become a running joke that Melania never smiles. This has been said to be largely due to her Eastern European background, which prevents her from showing joy in ways that most of us are accustomed to. However, body language experts have reviewed images and videos of the couple from their earlier days and notice a drastic difference between then and now. Body language expert Traci Brown shared her opinion with Elite Daily:
“We just can’t see any true smiles from her. Look at her eyes! She’s there in body but not spirit…We see her giving it her best shot earlier in their relationship much more than what we see now.”
On Melania Swatting Trump’s Hand Away
It’s uncommon to see ANY public figure blatantly disrespect their partner like this when the media is around, but for the First Lady to do it is certainly a first. At least the first to be caught on camera. While anyone with a brain can tell that this doesn’t look good for their relationship, a number of experts decided to weigh in as well. Brown’s analysis determined:
“I’ve been doing body language [analysis] the last 20 years, and I’ve never seen a situation where the president gets his hand swatted. He wants to have a connection when he wants to have a connection, and she is pretty clearly showing she’s tired of it. If you’re a real team, that kind of thing doesn’t really happen. There’s something going on behind the scenes that she would not want to do that.”
Expert Patti Wood had a slightly different interpretation of this moment:
“[Trump] was seeing Macron with his wife, and how affectionate they are, and how happy she was, and even her making a little bit of an attempt to make sure she was holding hands with her husband. I believe Trump’s motivation
in that moment, putting his fingers out to hold her hand, was so that he would look better.”
On Melania’s Behavior At The State Of The Union Address
After the news broke that Trump had an affair with Stormy Daniels and then paid for her silence, Melania chose to lay low for a while. When it came to the State of the Union Address, however, the First Lady bravely took on her political duties. This means she got her own ride to the event and robotically clapped for her husband when appropriate. In her defense, all eyes were on her as people were looking for any sign of a reaction to the news that Donald had strayed. While it’s obvious Melania isn’t thrilled to be there, she never really looks happy about anything these days. Body language expert Joe Navarro’s input was much needed to shed light on the situation and he quickly pointed out to HuffPost that Melania’s actions were different from any first lady in modern history.
“It was not that she looked stoic, though she often did, it was almost a distant pained look. She almost mechanically stood and applauded, without any form of alacrity. That may speak to some psychological discomfort and emotional pain.”
Body language expert and psychotherapist Paul Hokemeyer also gave his two cents on how Melania behaved during this event.
“She really did resist any expression of emotion during her husband’s speech. This tells me that she was exerting enormous restraint and taking back the power in her life. While she still seems uncomfortable in the spotlight, Melania is a fast student.”
On The Couple’s Future
It’s easy to say that once Trump’s presidential term ends that Melania will leave him, but we don’t really know that for sure. If these body language experts can tell when a relationship is on the rocks, can they predict when it’s past the point of repair? One expert did! Susan Constantine explains why she doesn’t think Trump’s third marriage will last:
“I just cannot imagine that these two are going to stay married; they don’t have even the elementary foundation of couple love and compassion and physical-ness between them. There’s none of that, I don’t see it.”
Only time will tell what the future truly holds for the couple!
