We said it was coming, and it finally has. Justin Bieber is the new King of Twitter, having officially passed Twitter Queen Lady Gaga in total followers on the social media site.
Late Monday night (despite outages) Beiber passed Lady Gaga in total followers on Twitter, with a total of 33,343,739 followers as of this posting. Lady Gaga, by comparison, has 33,337,104. I mean, what are a few thousand Twitter followers after 33M, am I right? *crickets*
Behind the King and Queen sits Katy Perry, with 31,484,156. Rihanna clocks in at #4 with 27,946,832, about 27,946,832 more people subjugated to half-naked pics of RiRi and Chris Brown than need to be, if you ask us.
President Obama is the 5th most-followed person on Twitter with 26,168,542.
According to twittercounter, a site that has been tracking this story, Bieber gained an average of 40,000 new followers a day over Gaga’s 30,000 Little Monsters, so the takeover was inevitable. Gaga has been in the lead since August of 2010, when she overtook pop icon and X-Factor judge Britney Spears.
For her part, Gaga seems to have gracefully passed the crown to Bieber. She tweeted this last Saturday:
So proud of @justinbieber and all the Beliebers! I’m only happy to see your fans growing in size, you all deserve it! Monsters support you!

Of course, that was before Bieber officially beat Lady Gaga in followers, but the writing has been on the wall for several days, and with Gaga’s online presence, it’s hard to argue she didn’t know it was coming.
In any case, they both have over 33,000,000 followers, and boast a healthy lead over any competition. I say they both win.
