The internet and conspiracy theories have always gone hand-in-hand, but doomsday theories in particular seem to be having a moment.
Last year, people online were convinced we were about to be destroyed by the planet Nibiru (also known as Planet X), with it crashing into us and causing a mass extinction. The theory gained traction again in March this year, but since it’s yet to happen, people seem to have moved on to an outerspace threat much closer to home.
On July 27th, earthlings will get to experience this century’s longest lunar eclipse to date. Known as a blood moon, the event will last two whole hours, in which the moon will glow bright red in the sky.
While most of us will be looking up at the sky in awe, doomsday theorists will be waiting patiently for the apocolypse.
Five years ago, Christian ministers John Hagee and Mark Blitz predicted a developing “tetrad,” a series of four lunar eclipses that take place during Jewish Holidays, with six full moons inbetween them. This is supposedly a definite sign that the world will end, with the ministers claiming the Biblical Book of Revelations backs up their theory.
Speaking to The Express, astromers Bruce McClure and Deborah Bryd, said:
“From what we’ve been able to gather, two Christian pastors, Mark Blitz and John Hagee, used the term ‘blood moon’ to apply to the full moons of the 2014-2015 tetrad.
“John Hagee appears to have popularised the term in his 2013 book Four Blood Moons: Something is About to Change.
“Mark Blitz and John Hagee spoke of the 2014-2015 lunar tetrad as representing a fulfilment of Biblical prophecy.
“After all, the moon is supposed to turn blood red before the end times, isn’t it?
“As described in Joel 2:31: ‘The sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood before the great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.”
But don’t let that spook you. The tetrad ended in 2015, and so far the end times have yet to make an appearance. The red tone is caused by the scattering of light in the earth’s atmosphere, sos don’t let conspiracy theorists put you off this once in a lifetime event.
