Old Man Learns How to Do Visually-Impaired Wife’s Makeup, Proves True Love Does Exist

If you ever needed evidence that true love really can last a lifetime, then this is it. After Des Manahan’s 82-year-old wife Mona started to lose her sight, the 83-year-old took makeup lessons to ensure she’d still be able to look and feel her best (unlike this guy, who sued his wife for fraud after seeing her bare-faced).

Des’s hidden talent for beauty was discovered when Mona visited makeup artist Rosie O’Driscoll to get ready for a birthday party. Des came along with his wife to the department store, and after watching Rosie work her magic decided to have a go himself.

Rosie, 43, told BBC Breakfast: “Des took the brushes from my hand and wanted to have a try. If you just see the way he holds the brushes, he’s a natural. He’s a natural.”

Describing his wife’s condition, Des explained that the vision in Mona’s left eye is “really bad,” and that she also has difficulty holding the brushes. While Mona was still attempting to apply her own makeup, Des would help by making corrections, and since the couple’s meeting with Rosie, the octogenarian has mastered lipstick, blush, and more.

Rosie said: “He got lesson after lesson after lesson, and loved every minute of it. I think he prefers me to take a step back now and let him off, let him do whatever he wants to do.”

Des makes sure he applies his wife’s makeup just the way she always did, going for “less is more.”

“We definitely don’t go for any kind of heavy makeup of any kind,” he said.

Now, his efforts have garned “awwws” from all over the world, with celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic offering him a spot on his next masterclass in London.

Des says that although he’s happy to Mona’s makeup for her, he loves her just the way she is. He said: “We both love each other as we are at 83 and 82, which I think is enough.”
