Imgur Reveals 2012 Stats: 300 Million Images Uploaded

Imgur is one of the largest image hosting sites in the world and to prove that position the social photo sharing platform released data from 2o12. Here are the stats:

  • 300 million images were uploaded
  • 364 billion image views were counted
  • 42 petabytes of data were transferred

Imgur also listed the top 12 photos of the year. Coming in at number one is Omari, a man who defended an orphanage in Kenya from attackers and suffered a gash in his face from a machete. Omari was in Kenya for an internship and posted a photo while asking for $2,000 in donations so the orphanage could finish setting up a cement/barbed wire wall to help keep out attackers. $80,000 was raised for the orphanage and the photo has been viewed over 1.5 million times.

Grumpy cat, also known as ‘Tard,’ became one of the biggest memes of 2012 and within 48 hours of an image being posted to Imgur it received over 1 million views. Tard went on to be featured on many humor websites and even made a few media appearances.

Barack Obama took to Reddit on August 29th, 2012 for an AMA (Ask Me Anything) where Redditors could submit questions for the President to answer. An image of Obama sitting at a laptop as he posted messages during his AMA witnessed over 2 million views.

NASA’s Curiosity rover landed on Mars August 6, 2012 and within two minutes of landing sent back an image showing that it successfully landed. The total views on Imgur are unknown as many users were quick to upload the photo.

At number five was a funny text message exchange for “Cat Facts.” It easily became one of the funniest and most used pranks of the year. The image saw almost five million views and resulted in 1.04 TB of data transferred.
