Democrats Stage Protest Sit-In on House Floor and Tweet For Gun Control Vote

This sit-in is on. Sometimes, sitting down for your right to vote can be a good way to stand up for what you believe in.

Georgia congressman John Lewis is no stranger to the art of protest. His days as a civil rights activist came to the fore once more in this past Wednesday when he and his fellow Democrats staged a dramatic sit-in to demand a vote on gun-control — as well as to disrupt political business ell into the night. The sit-in continues until this Thursday, and has lasted for more than 12 hours.

House Speaker Paul Ryan took to the stand and attempted to proceed with the day’s business, but Lewis and his sit-in colleagues shouted “Shame! Shame! Shame!” at Ryan. The House speaker attempted to address the Democrats, decrying the decline of “decorum in this institution to which we belong”, amid chants of “No bill, no break!” from the sit-in crowd.

Outside the Capitol, protesters have also joined in the spirit by singing “We Shall Overcome” and later, a call-and-response to “No Bill, No Break!”

NBC News reports:

“Sometimes you have to do something out of the ordinary, sometimes you have to make a way out of no way,” said Lewis, one of the last living icons of civil disobedience during the civil rights movement. “There comes a time when you have to say something, when you have to make a little noise, when you have to move your feet. This is the time. Now is the time to get in the way. The time to act is now. We will be silent no more.”

He and roughly 40 fellow House Democrats vowed “to occupy the floor of the House until there is action.”

Democrats and other representatives also stormed Twitter with accounts and calls to action during the sit-in:

It seems people are even preventing any coverage of this event. So the Democrats took it upon themselves to let the world in on what’s going on.
