Mexican Politician in Hot Water for Suggesting Euthanasia for Homeless

A Mexican politician is in hot water after making controversial remarks about homeless people.

O lga Gutierrez Machorro’s insensitive comments about the homeless must have surprised those who know her. As a town councilwoman, Machorro is known for working on behalf of the poor. Not long ago, she opened up her own home to those who had nowhere else to go. And yet, Machorro seems to believe homeless people should be “put down” like animals. At least, that’s what she told a local newspaper earlier this week, in an interview that would spark much outrage and backlash.

Speaking of the homeless, Machorro said:  “Yes they’re a little crazy, but they’re harmless. Which is why I think to myself wouldn’t it be kinder to just give them a lethal injection?”

Her comments shocked readers, as well as her colleagues. Part of Machorro’s job is overseeing the Vulnerable Groups Commission, a group dedicated to helping the homeless and economically disenfranchised.

Machorro has since apologized for the remarks, but it’s worth noting she may have been trying to bring current government policies to light. In her interview, she alleges the government run by Ines Lopez lacks the necessary funding to take care of the local homeless population. Particularly disturbing is her allegation that the government already kills homeless people through the practice of abandonment.

The local psychiatric hospital, Machorro says, often deposits patients they deem “un-aggressive” in the middle of busy roads late into the night. There they are killed by cars or the elements, completely abandoned by the state.

Machorro says she’s developing new plans to fight poverty and homelessness. One which, we hope, doesn’t involve euthanizing any human beings. Fingers crossed.
