Tess Munster’s message is pretty simple: #EffYourBeautyStandards.
Munster, who is 5 feet 5 inches tall and a size 22, is the first model of her size to sign with a major modeling agency. She’s also the woman behind the incredibly popular @effyourbeautystandards Instagram account.
After signing with the MiLK Model Management, Munster (who will go by the professional name Tess Holliday) said: “I feel like it’s breaking ground … This is a milestone.”
According to CNN, the industry standard for a plus-size model is between sizes 8 and 16. Tess is also shorter than most plus size models, who stand at least 5 feet and 8 inches tall.
Tess Munster has received an outpouring of support since signing with MiLK, but she also has her fair share of haters. The most common complaint is that Tess is promoting an unhealthy lifestyle.
MiLk Model Management owner and director Anna Shillinglaw said: “I see a lot of negative comments as well, and I ignore those. I know she’s healthy and active. We’re all built differently. Maybe people can lose weight if they walked more and ate less, but it’s so easy to say that. Everyone has their things in life.”
Tess Holliday wrote on Facebook: “It doesn’t feel like it’s me. Every time I have a big thing happen in my career, it’s an out of body experience. I’m always still that 13-year-old girl in Mississippi who people told I wasn’t good enough. I never could have imagined that I could be here.”
