The invisible boyfriend (or girlfriend), the solution to all of your relationship woes. Get your family and friends off your back about your single status. Give yourself a confidence boost with a imaginary relationship. One business is making your wildest relationship dreams come true, kinda.
For a small price, the Invisible Boyfriend company will supply a real person to call, text, leave voicemails, and even handwritten notes.
The company’s website claims “Invisible Boyfriend gives you real-world and social proof that you’re in a relationship – even if you’re not – so you can get back to living life on your own terms.”
Matthew Homann came up with the idea several years ago after a divorce and bought the domain InvisibleGirlfriend.com for $7.
He filed it away until late 2013, when he pitched it to a St. Louis hackathon.
A long weekend later, he and his team won the contest. Thanks to a Buzzfeed writer picking up the story, the business received immediate attention.
The website is launching in beta this week. The prices and packages are pretty straightforward. For $24.99 a month (for starters, which includes 100 text messages, voicemail and handwritten notes), you get to make up a story about how you met (the homepage includes a nice Mad Libs-style paragraph) and pick out an image, name, age and interests.
You choose the name, photo, age, basically building your perfect soulmate.
Eventually the company wants to branch out and allow the invisible partner to send gifts to the customer.
It will be interesting to see where this business venture ends up.
