Twitter is Salty About Iggy Azalea’s AMA Win

At the 42nd American Music Awards held on Sunday night, Iggy Azalea managed to pick up the Favorite Artist and Favorite Album awards in the Rap/Hip Hop category — and, as a result, a host of angry Twitter users have taken to the social network to express their distaste.

Azalea, who moved to the United States from her native Australia in 2006 to follow her rap aspirations, has enjoyed a very successful 2014. Featuring on Ariana Grande’s single Problem helped her match a chart-topping feat only accomplished by the Beatles when her own single Fancy and the Grande track nabbed the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100 in the same week.

However, despite her massive commercial success, there are plenty of don’t see the appeal of Azalea. Last year, Macklemore managed the same double AMA win as Azalea, and faced a similarly harsh response from some detractors who don’t consider radio friendly hip hop to be ‘real rap’. It seems that it’s all too easy to hate on the internet — here are a selection of the saltiest social media responses to Iggy’s big win.

A lot of the chat was fairly standard, but many went into specifics about which artists do and do not deserve this sort of plaudit for their work. Apparently, there’s some unknown distinction between the rap that Drake and Eminem put out compared to Azalea and Macklemore.

Of course, it wasn’t long before the real over-exaggeration began. There’s something about an awards show that really angries up the blood — but you won’t believe the sort of thing people were coming out with over this situation.

In fact, for some words weren’t enough — their hate came with illustrations.
