Has political correctness gone too far? What would it look like if it did?
That’s one of the questions this skit from Saturday Night Live tries to answer:
There’s been a lot of talk about the supposed decline of the Saturday Night Live institution. From this skit hyped as the worst in the program’s history, to slumping ratings, the voices proclaiming the show’s drop in quality seem to be getting louder.
Personally, I’ve never found SNL all that funny. And I gather I’m very likely not alone in that regard. But every once in a while, they’ll knock a skit out of a while through a combination of sheer topical relevance and cultural insight.
And that’s what they’ve done with this latest Dudley’s sketch that pretty neatly sums up how sitcoms have become absurdly PC blank slates subject to the whims of studio execs who care more about marketing than issues. The results are frustratingly inane shows like “The Dudleys,” which looks all too much like something you could slip into a CBS/NBC/Fox/ABC lineup.
