I’ve always wondered at the passion, eagerness, and tenacity of the people who line up for the newest iPhone and/or iPad outside Apple Stores around the world. Every time there is a new device released, people start lining up days before the device actually goes on sale. They camp out on the city streets, and basically live like homeless people for days.
Except that they have iPhones in their hands. They have comfy blankets, make-shift beds, and chairs.
The homeless people probably don’t have it as good. Or, looking at it another way, the people waiting in line for the latest iPhone have it as bad as the homeless people in a way.
Don’t get me wrong. There is no judgement being made here – I simply can’t see myself lining up for an iPhone as much as I probably can’t live without it for long.
Where is this coming from?
“On September 16th, a trio of Los Angeles-based creatives and a pair of New York City filmmakers spent the evening interviewing a group of people for whom homelessness has become a reality. The twist is that these individuals are enduring this reality by choice.
The people they spoke to have been waiting and living on the street for the September 19th release of the iPhone 6. Many of them have already spent nearly three weeks in anticipation of Apple’s newest smartphone, and all of them have just one more night to endure before they can finally return home.”
This video is called “The Wait”, and it aims to highlight the plight of the hundreds of thousands of homeless people across the country. Okay, it may be taking advantage of the iPhone 6 launch, but there is something to be said about the situation.
From the makers of “The Wait”:
For the over 610,000 homeless that spend their nights without shelter, the ordeal is a painful daily battle. And for the rest of America, the struggle is a totally foreign and unimaginable concept.
The makers of The Wait created the film to raise both awareness and donations for the homeless. Viewers who wish to help those in need can text “NCH” to 85944 to donate $10 to the National Coalition for the Homeless, a broad-based organization dedicated to prevent and end homelessness in America.
Watch the short film, and maybe think about how you can help.
