Michael Che Replacing Cecily Strong On SNL Weekend Update

There are going to be a few changes on SNL next year. Daily Show correspondent Michael Che will be replacing Cecily Strong on Weekend Update. Che will co-host the long running skit with Colin Jost.

The NY Times reports that Lorne Michaels went through “a number of different combinations” before finding the right people to anchor Weekend Update.

Lorne Michaels said: “Michael is a strong writer, and he’s really funny … It’s always difficult to make changes and make ‘Update’ different from what’s gone before.”

Cecily Strong built a big fanbase during her time on Weekend Update. She started alongside Seth Meyers two years ago. When Meyers left for his own talk show, she was joined by Colin Host. Michaels said that the last two seasons of Weekend Update were funny but that they struggled to find an identity.

Michaels said: “It struggled to find an identity last season … Because what had come before had been pretty brilliant. This is about a new era, what feels appropriate for now … That’s why we did a lot of combinations and tests, and this is kind of where we came out.”

Fans may be upset that Cecily Strong is getting replaced on Weekend Update, but according to Michaels it’s a move that the comedian had asked for. Cecily apparently wanted out of the news desk so that she could do more characters on the show.

Let’s hope that’s true. Cecily is one of the funniest cast members at SNL at the moment and deserves a chance to make people laugh.

As for Michael Che, he’s a talented comedian as well and should do fine in his new position. Some of SNL’s most famous alums seem excited to see what he can do on Weekend Update.

Do you think Michael Che is a good choice for SNL Weekend Update?
