DiGiorno Pizza Accidentally Uses Domestic Abuse Hashtag To Plug Pizza

DiGiorno Pizza accidentally turned the domestic abuse hashtag #WhyIStayed into a pitch for pizza last night.

Twitter has been using the hashtag #WhyIStayed to explore the reasons why a victim, like Janay Rice, would stay in an abusive relationship. Shortly after Janay was attacked by her boyfriend Ray Rice in an elevator she decided to get married to him. And this morning, she posted a message on Instagram that blamed everyone but her husband for the embarrassment and pain she has been suffering.

We don’t know why Janay Rice has decided to stay with Ray Rice. Her reasons may be right or they may be wrong. Regardless, it has sparked one of the most emotional hashtags in recent memory.

DiGiorno saw that the #WhyIStayed hashtag was trending on Twitter and decided to jump on the momentum to plug pizza.

The tweet, which has now been deleted, read: #WhyIStayed because you had pizza.

That wasn’t really the right thing to say.

DiGiorno quickly deleted the tweet and then added an apology. The company said that it never read what the hashtag was about before posting it’s message.

This seems like an honest and unfortunate mistake. Were you upset by Digiorno Pizza’s tweet?
