Jesús Montero used an ice cream sandwich as a weapon this week during a minor league baseball game.
Montero is one of the top prospects in the farm system but his weight and conditioning has been a bit of an issue with scouts. The minor league player showed up to training camp 40 pounds overweight and he’s a little sensitive about his weight.
Montero apparently lost it after a scout reportedly heckled him for not hustling off the field and then sent him an ice cream sandwich in the dugout.
NESN reports that Montero flipped out and tried to climb up into the stands to fight the scout. The baseball player wasn’t able to get close enough to punch the scout, he was held back by his teammates, but he did get close enough to hurl an ice cream sandwich in the scout’s direction.
The scout, Butch Baccala, says that the incident is being inaccurately reported by the media. Baccala says that he never sent an ice cream sandwich to Jesus Montero and he certainly didn’t mean to anger the minor league player.
Baccala said: “It’s not what is being portrayed … Of course I wasn’t [trying to instigate Montero]. Why would I? I work for the Mariners. I’ve worked my [expletive] off for the Mariners. Why would I do anything to hurt anybody? That wasn’t even close to the intention.”
We don’t know exactly what happened between Jesus Montero and Butch Baccala. But we do know that an ice cream sandwich was needlessly wasted.
