Hello Kitty Is Not A Cat, Internet Freaks Out

For close to 40 years now, everyone believed that Hello Kitty was a cat. Well, we were all wrong. Hello Kitty is actually a little cartoon girl.

Shocked? Don’t be too ashamed of your Hello Kitty ignorance. After all, Chrstine R. Yano, a Hello Kitty scholar, was also surprised by the news.

Yano, who is currently preparing an exhibit for the 40th anniversary of the iconic character, described Hello Kitty as a cat at the Japanese American National Museum. But she was wrong.

Yano said: “I was corrected — very firmly. That’s one correction Sanrio (the company that makes Hello Kity) made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.”

This isn’t exactly new news. Sanrio even describes Hello Kitty as a girl in her biography page. I guess we just all assumed that she was a cat because, you know, she looks like a cat.

Still, the internet freaked out when they found out that Hello Kitty wasn’t a cat.

Hello Kitty actually has a pretty extensive back story. She’s British, a Scorpio, weighs about three apples and loves making pancakes. She also has a twin sister, Mimmy, and a pet cat (who is actually a cat) named Charmmy Kitty.
