During the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, Common went on stage to speak introduce Best Hip-hop video. Before introducing the nominees, he mentioned the events happening in Ferguson, MO.
While Common was speaking, the footage cut to the Kardashians (Kim, Kylie, Kendall) in the audience paying attention to only their phones. When others were taking a moment of silence for Mike Brown, the Kardashian sisters were scrolling through Instagram (probably).
People took to Twitter to voice their opinions. It is unclear whether or not MTV used footage from earlier or later in the show and placed the Dash audience clip in the Ferguson speech. Either way, viewers were not amused.
