Reading Rainbow Kickstarter Launched By Levar Burton

Levar Burton wants to resurrect Reading Rainbow. The former TV host launched a Kickstarter campaign this week to get bring the children’s show back and inspire a new generation of kids to read books.

Burton has already released a Reading Rainbow iPad app but the actor knows that many children don’t have access to a tablet. Now he’s hoping to extend the reach of Reading Rainbow by bringing the show to the internet.

Burton said: “When Reading Rainbow began in 1983, we were using television to bring books to kids, meeting them where they wanted to be. In 2014, TV is not that place anymore. Now, we’re trying to reach a new generation of digital natives … Not all families have access to tablets. Our goal is to cultivate a love of reading in all children, not just those that have tablets. To kids everywhere, we need to be everywhere: We need to be on the web.

Burton is hoping to raise over $1 million with his Kickstarter campaign and he’s had a pretty good start. So far, more than 1500 people have donated to the campaign and he has raised close to $100,000. It’s actually pretty incredible. You can go to the Kickstarter page here and watch the donations pour in.
