Asteroid To Destroy Earth In 2041? CNN Deletes Hoax Story

asteroid hoax

CNN’s iReport allows “citizen journalists” to report on the stories that matter to them. You know, like stories about giant asteroids that will obliterate all life on earth.

An article published on CNN’s iReport over the weekend claimed that the wold would be coming to an end in 2041. The article said that a 10-mile-wide asteroid had been spotted by the NeoWise telescope and that it was on a crash course with earth.

So when was it going to hit? Apparently on March 35, 2041. You read that right. March 35…

The report reads: “Scientists believe that during a close encounter with Mars, the asteroid was nudged slightly off its usual orbit and may currently be on a high speed collision course with our fragile planet. The asteroid is calculated to have a potentially lethal encounter with the Earth on March 35, 2041.”

The story was viewed more than 200,000 times before it was removed by CNN. The news agency replaced the story with a statement from NASA.

The statement reads: NASA has confirmed via email that this story is false. A spokewoman for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory says that the largest object detected by NEOWISE measures 3 km in diameter and poses no risk to Earth. The iReport has been removed.
