Gabriel Garcia Marquez Mourned On Twitter

Author Gabriel Garcia Marquez passed away today at the age of 87.

The Nobel winning novelist, who penned books like One Hundred Years Of Solitude and Love In The Time Of Cholera, passed away this morning in Mexico City. An exact cause of death is not known but the BBC reports that “Gabo” had been ill recently and very seldom made public appearances.

The author, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982, was mourned by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Twitter.

Santos said: “One Hundred Years of Solitude and sadness for the death of the greatest Colombian of all time.”

Hundreds of others have also used Twitter to mourn the legendary author. Gabrial Garcia Marquez was the first Colombian to win literature’s greatest award. After winning the award, Gabo said that the prize was not given to him but to all authors of Colombia.

Gabo said: “I have the impression that in giving me the prize, they have taken into account the literature of the sub-continent and have awarded me as a way of awarding all of this literature.”

Other world leaders have issued statements to the press in the wake of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ death.

Bill Clinton said: “From the time I read ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ more than 40 years ago, I was always amazed by his unique gifts of imagination, clarity of thought, and emotional honesty … I was honored to be his friend and to know his great heart and brilliant mind for more than 20 years.”

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said: “Gabo has left us and we will have years of solitude. But his works and his love for the motherland remain. Farewell until the victory, dear Gabo.”
