Veishea is an annual excuse Iowans use to get drunk on the campus of Iowa State University.
The event is designed to be a week long demonstration of ISU facilities and campus organizations. Instead, something about Veishea causes otherwise intelligent students to flip over cars, set things on fire and throw rocks at police.
It couldn’t be alcohol, could it?
They’ve discussed banning alcohol at Veishea in the past and the idea was greeted by an angry mob.
The alcohol remained and so does the rioting.
Ames police broke up a Veishea related party late Tuesday that later spilled on to the streets and caused yet another riot.
Students were well armed with smart phones.

#VEISHEA2K14 unfolded on social media in real time.
The mob knocked down multiple light poles, ripped stop signs from the ground and flipped over vehicles.

One student was seriously injured by a falling light pole. The Des Moines Register reported that emergency personnel was blocked from the causality by the crowd.
Students clashed with an Ames police force unprepared to handle potential violence. This despite repeated incidents of violence at Veishea in the past.
Ames Police Commander Geoff Huff acknowledged that only 7-8 officers were on duty last night.
“Like any year, we were ready to go,” Huff said. “We just didn’t expect it so early.”

Disclaimer: These idiots in no way represent the overall student body of Iowa State or the people of Ames. Some of the smartest people I know are ISU grads. The foolish behavior of some ruins Veishea for all.
