Twitter Users #PrayForChile After Country Hit By Major Earthquake

Chile Earthquake

Chile was hit by an 8.2-magnitude earthquake Tuesday evening around 8:46 PM local time, and currently six people are reported dead.

It struck off the coast 60 miles northwest of Iquique, and the USGS said it had a depth of 12.5 miles.

From Chile President Michelle Bachelet:

“The fact is, we will know the extent of the damage as time goes by and when we inspect the areas in the light of day. The country has faced these first emergency hours very well.”

Hashtag #PrayForChile is currently a number one trending topic in the United States as Twitter users share their thoughts and best wishes.

Here’s what a few celebrities tweeted:

Chile was hit by two earthquakes in March, a 6.7 and 6.1-magnitude, and this latest was nearly as strong as the 8.8 that hit in February 2010, killing around 500 people.
