According to a report published in India Today, a 24 year old Indian woman was accused of being addicted to Facebook by her parents and responded by committing suicide.
The woman hung herself from a ceiling fan in her room after being confronted about her obsession with the social network.
Sushma Goswami, was scolded for her extreme use of Facebook and was told to delete her account. She responded to the request by hanging herself. Goswami signed up for Facebook just last September and the site quickly started to consume her life.
What started out as a mere discovery of Facebook, turned into hours among hours of sitting in front of her computer, neglecting daily chores and doing very little outside of spending time online.
Her younger brother was also a heavy user of the social network which infuriated their parents even more. Both siblings had over a thousand friends online even though they spent most of their time confined and focused nearly entirely on their studies.
After the confrontation with her parents, Goswami went to her room where she locked herself in. The next morning she was found hanging from the ceiling fan.
According to the police report she left a suicide note behind in her diary that partially reads “Mummy, forgive me.”
