Pope Francis, seen as a radically different pope than his predecessors, was named at TIME’s Person of the Year. He has reached out to the LGBT community, and other groups that have been traditionally ostracized by the Catholic Church.
To celebrate his first year as Pope he will spend the day at a prayer retreat outside Rome, prayers meant to mark the start of Lent.
