Tracking The Sochi Winter Olympics On Twitter … America And Canada Win

Sochi Winter Olympics

The Sochi Winter Olympics has come to an end, but that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped examining the impact of the event on social media.

The team at MediaMiser poured over more than four million tweets to determine the impact of the event on Twitter. The study specifically attempted to determine which athletes and events generated the most buzz.

The Canadian friendly sports of hockey, curling, and figure skating claimed the top three spots, while the top three athletes (Charlie White, TJ Oshie, and Meryl Davis) all hail from the United States.

Researchers specifically followed these hashtags: #Sochi2014, #Sochi, #Olympics, and #Sochiolympics. Obviously other event specific and athlete specific terms were also used by Twitter users. However, those hashtags dominated most of the Winter Olympics coverage.
