Want to use Instagram for your next social campaign? Take a few cues from the Toronto Silent Film Festival and think outside of the box.

Social campaigns are usually pretty hit-and-miss because, let’s face it: Most businesses still have no idea how to use social media, and lightning in the social sphere very rarely, if ever, strikes the same place twice.

What it really comes down to is creative thinking and figuring out how to use each social networking platform to your advantage. To wit, Toronto-based Cossette came up with a pretty ingenious way to use Instagram to campaign for the upcoming Toronto Silent Film Festival.

All you need to do is search for “TSFF2014” on Instagram and find the “Instagram Time Machine” account. Desktop users will be a little confused, but if you’re on mobile, turn your device sideways and you’ll see how Cossette laboriously turned the TSFF2014 account into an interactive timeline focused on the silent era’s greatest star, Charlie Chaplin.

It’s pretty clever, and AgencySpy opines that we’ll be seeing copycats as soon as next week. But like we said up top … lightning in the social sphere rarely, if ever, strikes the same place twice.
