WhatsApp Processes 50 Billion Messages Daily

WhatsApp, the paid messaging service that announced over 400 million monthly active users in December, now processes 50 billion messages per day.

Co-Founder and CEO Jan Koum spoke in Munich, Germany at the DLD conference, and also revealed its active users have increased to 430 million.

Koum talked about the company’s focus purely on messaging, and while WhatsApp is making money, it’s currently focused more on getting the service right than monetization.

From TechCrunch:

“When we started the company, we wanted to build something for the long term and sustainable. It’s not hard to sell a company, but if you look at [leading online] companies today like Facebook, Google, Yahoo and Twitter, they didn’t sell. They stuck around and built a great offering for users. For us it’s about [building] a company that is here to stay.”

Koum also said that expensive long distance fees to talk with his family in the Ukraine inspired the incredibly affordable 99 cents per year price, and the goal is to eventually get WhatsApp on every single smartphone.
