Yahoo Acquires ‘Rockmelt’ Social Browser Platform

Rockmelt Purchased By Yahoo

Yahoo continued to buy the web on Friday after announcing the acquisition of social browser company Rockmelt.

On its official blog Rockmelt writes:

“Yahoo and Rockmelt share a common goal: To help people discover the best content from around the web.”

AllThingsD reports a Yahoo acquisition price between $60 million and $70 million.

The report suggests that Yahoo will use the browser tech to “turbocharge” its media properties.

Rockmelt was formed in 2009 and currently counts 4 million users among its loyal users. The first Rockmelt desktop app launched in 2010 and another option arrived for the Apple iOS platform for iPhone’s in late 2012.

Under the leadership of former Googler Marissa Mayer the company continues to buy up cutting edge internet firms in the social and platform spaces.
