If you don’t have a gay friend on Facebook you are in the minority. A new survey in honor of Gay Pride Week concludes that 70% of US users on the social network are friends with at least one gay person.
The study includes users who have listed themselves as gay, lesbian, or bi-sexual.
In the past it was impossible to easily gauge sexual orientation online because Facebook didn’t allow for sexual preference listing. Now not only can users list their sexual preference, users can also type “Friends who are gay” into Graph Search to determine how many gay friends they have. In fact typing that search offers a few other suggestions including “My friends who are men interested in men” and “My friends who are women interested in women.”
That 70% threshold doesn’t even include closeted Facebook users and people who have not listed their sexual orientation as gay.
So the next time you say “that was so gay” in a wall post just remember that you probably have a gay friend on Facebook who is seeing those messages.
