WordPress might be the biggest winner in Yahoo’s $1.1 billion cash acquisition of Tumblr.
WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg announced on his blog Sunday night that more than 72,000 blog posts were imported to WordPress.com in a single hour. The massive spike in imports was reported immediately following Yahoo’s confirmation that it had acquired Tumblr.
In comparison, 400 to 600 imported blog posts are typically witnessed on most Sunday’s.
While 72,000 blog posts is a drop in the bucket for a company that currently features more than 50.9 billion posts, it still shows a potential problem for Yahoo, the ability to keep the site “cool” for younger demographics. Tumblr according to recent reports has managed to steal young users away from Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks.
Users may be worried that Yahoo will reel in their attempts to showcase any type of content they see fit. Tumblr currently allows for adult content on its blogs and Yahoo says it will remain its own entity but that promise may not be enough for many users.
This is hardly the first time we have witnessed an exodus of sorts, when Instagram was purchased by Facebook a slight drop off was witnessed. However, Instagram soon went on to release a Google Android app and ever since the photo friendly social sharing network has skyrocketed in popularity.
Could Yahoo ruin Tumblr? That all depends on the company’s approach. Marissa Mayer has already announced plans to rapidly grow Tumblr’s advertising efforts. If Tumblr becomes just another ad platform its cult following could falter.
