On a recent trip, even I was surprised to see how much social media has become a part of the travel process.

Checking in suddenly becomes more compelling when you have somewhere interesting to be (and new badges to earn.) An airline’s Twitter account is quicker and more efficient at disseminating information (and low fares.) Hotels connect with fans on Facebook.

Just how broad the impact of social media has been on travel, travel plans, travel habits and travel news is pretty staggering. The folks at new social travel start-up Tripl have slogged them all together into one stunning and handy infographic, below.
