Seahawks Player Tweets Coming Out Gay Is ‘Selfish’

We’re all still in the dark as to who the mystery NFL player who plans to come out of the closet as a homosexual could be, but Chris Clemons of the Seatlle Seahawks thinks that whoever it is ought to keep it to themselves for now.

On his Twitter account, Clemons said that he’s not homophobic, but that he thinks that a fellow NFL player’s homosexuality “should be left at home” and that coming out publicly would be a selfish act” because it looks like an attempt to be “bigger than the team.”

Now we do have to give Clemons some credit, because from the thread on his Twitter page, it looks like he engaged in a fairly constructive dialogue about the issue. Still, critics took issue with his premise of “selfishness.”

“I know there may be players who share Clemons’ sentiment but asking a player to remain closeted is the only selfish act in this situation,” said Hudson Taylor, the executive director of Athlete Ally, a group that seeks to end homophobia in sports. “It is time for all of us to commit to making sports a better place. We need to standby the lessons of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Let’s learn from the experiences of Jackie Robinson and be on the better side of history.”
