Facebook Adopting The Hashtag, Will Become Part Of Graph Search

Facebook is going the way of Twitter, adopting the hashtag (#) as its newest form of streamlined communication for focused conversations. According to several reports the hashtag will become part of the Facebook Graph Search.

At this time it is still unclear how far Facebook will take the hashtag technology. The company is believed to be testing various ways in which it can include the hashtag while extending its use.

Twitter may have streamlined the use of the hashtag but various other networks also now use the symbol. Social networks using the hashtag already include Instagram and Pinterest, among others.

Graph Search doesn’t currently crawl every single user post but ultimately the Facebook # could lead to strong search options based on very specific conversations.

Facebook could ultimately cannibalize the hashtag technology by focusing its efforts on sponsored hashtag posts. As I reported earlier today, at least one expert has complained about Facebook’s cluttered news feed and the over-commercialization of its product.

While the hashtag could be over utilized for Facebook ads, it could also help make the network more intimate by targeting users across the network.

My wife is a mom blogger and she regularly talks to a tight-nit group of women who love the #clothdiapers hashtag. If if wasn’t for that hashtag many cloth diaper loving women who have just been more voiceless users in a network that features hundreds of millions of users.
