Could robots one day walk among us? Many scientists believe so. Actually, it might be sooner than we thought. Meet Sophia, the robot. Created by American robotics expert, David Hanson, this lifelike creation uses artificial intelligence to carry on conversations. Using the cameras in her eyes, Sophia can decipher faces and comprehend facial expressions, as well as understand commands and questions.

As The Daily Mail reports, Sophia’s appearance was inspired by Audrey Hepburn and Dr Hanson’s wife.

“She is intended to embody classic beauty,” the company says. “With fine porcelain skin, a slender nose, high cheekbones, an intriguing smile and deeply expressive eyes.”

Check out Sophia in action during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Sophia shares a joke with Fallon: ‘What cheese can never be yours?’. The answer: ‘nacho cheese.’
She also challenged Jimmy to a game of rock, paper, scissors – and won.

As you can see, she has quite the sense of humor. However, we can’t help but be slightly creeped out by her realistic appearance. Or when she made the joke about dominating the human race…

Sophia isn’t the first robot of her kind. In fact, she is just one of twenty other robots made by Hanson’s robotics company. Actually, scientists all over the world have been working on their own robot creations, each more realistic than the other. As one scientist said, one day these robots will walk among us and we won’t be able to tell if they are human or not. If that isn’t enough to inspire a nightmare, then we don’t know what is.
