Earlier in June, 13-year-old Jay Kelly came out as transgender on social media. Son of R. Kelly and Drea Kelly, revealed he was born female but now identifies as a male.
“I believe I am a boy, and want surgery, and the medication to help me be who I was supposed to be,” Jay said on his site. “Being transgender, knowing that your a transgender, is not a phase. It’s like once you read about it and know that’s exactly how you feel, there’s no going back. It’s not a choice, it’s just a part of life.”
Up until now, R. Kelly did not make an public comments on his son’s brave announcement. On Sunday, the singer sat down with Chicago WGCI at the 2014 Summer Jam and Nina Chantele asked: “There [are] reports of your daughter becoming, you know, your son. Would you like to address that? Because, a lot of blogs are saying that you’re not addressing it.”
“You don’t wanna really open it up with saying my daughter’s becoming my son … You save money so your kids can go to college,” Kelly said. “No matter what they are or who they are, they’re still your kids, you love them, you know? You’ve got to support them. You want to support them. … At the end of the day it’s not about me no more. It’s about three lovely, lovely kids that I am in love with and that’s in love with me.”
Glad to know R. Kelly is supportive. You can see more of Jay and follow his story on his Instagram account.
